Volunteer Trip to Antigua, Guatemala To Build Homes For Families In Need
When asked to go on a volunteer trip to Guatemala to build houses for those in need I had zero hesitation and was immediately in for the challenge. While I knew it was not going to be easy I had no way of preparing for what I was about to endure. I spent 3 months prior to the trip switching up my daily workout and focused more on Cross-fit training because I knew that I had 7 straight days of lugging cement block in my future.
While I am the overly organized fully prepared person who is ready for any situation possible there was nothing that could prepare me for what was in store for me in the days ahead.
A group of us from my company went to build cement houses with corrugated metal roofing for families who were living in cornstalk homes with dirt floors. While in the US we would equate what we had built for these families to a shed that we would house lawn items and such in for these families we had built them something the could never dream of, a home.
You really do not understand how fortunate you are to have the things that you do until you spend time with others who have barely anything at all. I have built may commercial and residential spaces through out my career but this house was by far the best thing I have built to date! I cannot wait to go back and build another!
